Pilates

The Pilates system of exercise is a safe, controlled, and extremely effective system of exercise that works your body from head to toe. The originator of the method, Joseph Pilates, a boxer and circus performer, began to develop floor exercises at the outbreak of WWI which would eventually develop in to "Mat Pilates." He then began to work with injured or ill detainees using equipment available to him which would become Pilates' staples such as the "circle" and the "reformer" - this later became part of the apparatus repertoire. He also spent many years studying Western vs. Eastern approaches to healing and health, and tried to integrate both into the discipline. He observed how animals and children moved and sought to incorporate the same principles of effective movement with minimal effort into his method.

Over the years, Pilates has often been used by dancers as an adapted method to improve their craft, and help them heal from injury more quickly and effectively. It is a method that focuses on strengthening what is called "the core" - this covers the region of the abdomen, lower back, inner/outer thighs and buttocks.
