What is NLP?
Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) was created in the early 1970's by a linguistics professor by the name of John Grinder and a Mathematician/Psychology student called Richard Bandler. In essence, NLP is the study of how we use verbal and non verbal language to direct our own nervous system (neuro = referring to the brain, linguistic = referring to language). They were fascinated by how successful people managed to accomplish what they did in life and tried to determine if there was a way to decode successful behavior. They studied the communication and influence patterns of successful therapists and other successful people of the time to determine the recipes for achievement. In so doing, they were able to outline specific behavior patterns that people use to make their brain function in an optimal way. By being able to breakdown the elements of successful behavior, the founders were able to develop practical tools to allow people to reproduce desirable/successful behavior in less successful areas of their lives. Various pattern changing techniques and tools are used in NLP including the use of hypnotic techniques.
